Not sure how many people saw this bit of news, but it looks like the Los Angeles DWP is getting set to institute water rationing for the City of Los Angeles. According to the Reuters story, every home and business is going to have a monthly allotment of water - though the story doesn't mention how that allotment is going to be decided - and anything in excess of that allotment will charge double. The article goes on to add that, "The DWP board also voted unanimously to restrict lawn sprinkler use to two days a week, as urged by the mayor. Outdoor irrigation accounts for 40 percent of residential water use in the city, DWP officials say."

Pause for a moment. Outdoor irrigation accounts for 40 percent of residential water use in the city. I mean, it's not the hardest thing in the world to believe, but it still makes you pause just a little. We could cut the city's water usage by a huge margin if we just did a better job of regulating our watering of sidewalks and expansive lawns. I happened to see a talk a couple of weeks back in which the speaker was explaining some of the ways in which she and her colleagues had mapped water usage in Phoenix. Really fascinating stuff. I wonder if anyone's undertaken a project like that in Los Angeles, and I wonder what they'd find.
