On the Meanings of 'Bakalım'

From an 1892 guidebook, L'Orient d'Oggi (Milan: Libreria Edit. Galli) a small footnote about the word bakalım:
What struck me wasn't the identification of a word that encapsulated an entire social order -- I remember reading a Jan Morris essay about Istanbul with a title like, "The city of yok" -- but the way that the author found an equivalent in Italian.
