Sedad Hakkı Eldem sketch for proposed monument to Çanakkale Martyrs. (SALT Research, TSHEPA02702002) |
I've been writing recently about the aesthetics of the monuments that have emerged in the aftermath of Turkey's July 15, 2016 coup attempt. Given the frequency with which the resistance to that coup attempt is linked to the Ottoman victory at Çanakkale, I became curious to see whether the architecture of the monuments was at all similar. As happens, this quickly unspooled into a search of the archives of SALT Research, where I realized there are a number of sketches likely produced for the design competition in the 1940s. One of them that stood out is the one above - a plan prepared by the renowned architect Sedad
Hakkı Eldem. It features a massive central
iwan, and its floor plan seems remarkably similar to a model of Islamic architecture found in Iran as well.
I'm not sure where this writing will go - but nevertheless a remarkable plan.
