Scene: Young Buck in a Season of Between

Walking with Ollie around the pond yesterday. The snow from last week melting, thick earth sticks to the shoe. Later we will see the ducks clustered at the filigree line of the ice, the seasons paused between. Suddenly a crunch snap plunge of long legs through new ice; a young buck breaks out of the reeds and across the damp earth. The ginkgo trees and the oaks have lost their leaves, the lilac's spindled branches are bare. He springs once, twice, and is gone.

Perhaps it is the season of hungry deer.
