A bill just passed the United States House of Representatives calling on Turkey to "safeguard its Christian heritage." Leaving aside a debate on the merits and motivations of the bill, I was suddenly struck in looking at this photo by how rich and complicated that 'heritage' is -- How do we conceive of the 'Christian' in a 'Christian heritage'? Does this bust count? Why or why not? Interesting times.
