In its current incarnation, this fountain is only a couple of years old. As near as I've been able to establish, the oldest fountain at all only dates back to the renovation and restoration projects of the 1990s. Even so, it's become one of the most often photographed sites in the neighborhood. It's interesting to watch the different ways that the fountain -- and the mosque behind it -- serves as a backdrop for people taking photographs. Is the fountain the
object of their photograph or only its
context? I suppose we could ask a similar question about the mosque as well, if in a slightly different vein than I was suggesting
here.
